Why PSAT Subset Scores Matter

When students take the PSAT, they often only look at the main score (400-1600) and the distinct verbal (Reading & Writing) and math scores. However, there are additional tools provided from practice test results that allow students to better understand their strengths and challenge spots: subset scores. The SAT is a standardized test, which means that the concepts repeat between tests. College Board, the creator of the SAT, has divided the primary concepts between eight subset categories. For the Math section, they are “algebra,” “problem solving and data analysis,” and “advanced math,” and “geometry and trigonometry.” For the Verbal section (Reading & Writing) they are “craft and structure,” “information and ideas,” “standard english conventions,” and “expression of ideas.” At Score Higher Tutoring, we provide students a comprehensive review of their PSAT subset scores, allowing them to work smarter, not harder. Once a student better understands their challenge areas, they can focus their study. When students focus their attention on challenging areas, we see increased proficiency with previously unclear concepts.
